Delete your account and data
You can have your SpeakSpeak account deleted at any time. There are two ways: from inside the app, or by email if you can no longer sign in.
In the app
- Open Settings
- Choose Your data
- Tap Delete my account & data and confirm with your password
The password step is deliberate: it stops someone else deleting your account from your unlocked device.
By email
If you cannot sign in any more, write to contact@speakspeak.net from the address your account is registered with, and include your username so we can identify the account.
What is deleted
Removed completely:
- Email address, username, display name, date of birth and profile picture
- Files you uploaded, voice messages and your own soundboard sounds, including the copies in object storage
- All sessions and devices
- The link between your content and you as a person
What stays, and why
Messages you wrote in shared servers or direct messages stay readable for the other participants. They appear without any connection to you, as Deleted User.
That is a deliberate decision: a conversation belongs to everyone in it. Removing your side of it would leave other people's conversations incomprehensible. The link to you is removed; their record of the conversation is not.
Retention periods
Beyond the deletion itself we keep nothing, with one exception:
- Content reported to authorities: 90 days. Where content has been blocked as part of a report to the German Federal Criminal Police Office, we are required to preserve it as evidence for 90 days from the report (§ 184b, § 184c German Criminal Code together with § 10 JuSchG). Your personal link is removed immediately even then. After the period the content is deleted, unless the authority requests an extension.
Your data may also persist briefly in backups of the database and of the file storage. Those backups are overwritten within 30 days at the latest; an additional versioned copy on our own hardware may retain individual states temporarily for longer. No deleted account is restored from them; they exist solely to protect against data loss.
There is no further retention. We hold no payment data that commercial or tax law would require us to keep.
How long it takes
Every request is reviewed by a person and carried out within one month, as the GDPR requires. It is usually much faster. You get a confirmation once the deletion is complete.
Deletion is final. There is no recovery, not even on request.
Taking your data with you first
The same place in Settings lets you request a copy of your data beforehand. You receive it as an archive to download. Worth doing if you want to keep voice messages or files, because after deletion they are gone.
The controller is the provider named in the imprint. Details of the processing are in the privacy policy.
